Thanksgiving

Breaking Radio Silence

I could tell you all that I have been up to since August, but truth be told, this is my busiest time of year with my Photography Business and silly me, added another business to the round up, so double that and you will know where I am. Spinning out of control.  I promised myself I would blog on my birthday, but I had to work, for the first time ever on my birthday so instead I am blogging tonight, almost a week later. I haven’t forgotten about my blog as some of you may think, I have been told that people have given up on me. That is Ok because if you know me well you know where to find me: Photography Blog, Twitter, Instagram, email and we would still be in touch. I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth, I have just been working hard.

Since August, I have had Apple start school full time, started my Arbonne Business, Ballet, been to Delaware three more times (and another trip coming up), Birthday parties for J and Apple and Fall Family Sessions along with Photographing conferences, Photo walks and actually meeting people in person instead of online. Phew.

All this talk of Hurricane made me remember that I never shared the after photos of the Beach House. The very Beach House that had us praying for its safety.  You see, our little dream is located on a flood plane on Rehoboth Bay in Delaware. We are mere steps from The Bay, which empties out into the ocean. When we stand on the crabbing pier we look out to the Indian Inlet Bridge that was closed Sunday due to flooding. So you can imagine what we did for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We trolled the internet for any signs that our Beach House was not floating away into Rehoboth Bay. As Rehoboth Beach (which includes us) was evacuated on Saturday we knew we lost any hope of contact with our neighbours, some of which live there year round. Our handyman Rich and his wife, not only have a home in Rehoboth but also in Chincoteague Island, Virginia. We prayed for their safety and are happy that at least their home in Rehoboth was spared, not so sure about Chincoteague but we will find out soon.

Our Beach House was indeed spared. With talks of flooding in The Bay, and the main road into our community we thought for sure the water would be up to the doorway or worse. We had no illusions of grandure, we expected to find out that we had to start from scratch. We were prepared for the worst. When Hubby called the office today after we heard the driving ban was lifted, he was surprised to talk to the ladies in the office, laughing and telling him that it was a miracle that there was no flooding to our houses. The water did come up our street a little but nothing more than a regular summer storm would bring.  Miracles to happen and although I am saddened by the news for others in other States like New York and New Jersey, I can’t help but be thankful that we were spared.  We will make the trek this weekend to check that the roof didn’t leak and that there isn’t anything to be taken care of that can’t wait for Thanksgiving. Yes, we will return later in the month for Thanksgiving (unless there is lots of snow up here) as we have so much to be Thankful for this year.

Here is a little peek into our Beach House, post renos. And honestly all we did this year was replace the floor (which included patching holes), wash the walls and bring in new beds and a couch. Next year we are going to update the bathrooms (which are 1969 old), paint and possibly add an outside shower. After spending three weeks here in June and July it was amazing what you can live without. We had very little with us, a few toys, an xbox (for games and movies) and our computers. We spent mornings on the beach and afternoons by the pool. We alternated nights with staying home and going to the boardwalk.  My cousin even lent me her 1989 Jeep Wagoneer so I could stay longer with J and Apple and she hadn’t even driven it yet!

Our Living Room (with lunch to head home already packed on the table) and the hallway leading from the backdoor to the living room.

Kitchen, with retro cabinets that will see an update sometime in the future and Apple’s mini room that just fits a bunkbed. Great place for J to sleep when we have guests (which we have had a few times now)

And the Master Bedroom, complete with ensuite/full bathroom.  We chose to go with Queen beds in the main bedroom and front bedroom so that we could sleep comfortably, it means that there isn’t a lot of room to walk around the beds, but they do move easily on the floor and it makes for a much more comfy sleep in the heat… trust me on that one.

And that is a little tour of the Beach House. Hubby and I will head down to check it out later this week, while the kids stay home and go to school.

We were thrilled to be at the Beach House for Canadian Thanksgiving, where we cooked a turkey and had our family over for supper, we were tight, but we managed with eight of us watching a football game and enjoying Canadian turkey. We also had two amazing days on the beach before the weather turned cold. A little last fling of summer for sure.

Here is a little Summer Recap from Instagram:

We Love you Aunt Joyce

AuntJoyce-2

August 2011

It has taken me three days to even get to the point that I can try and write something, but I need and must do it.

AuntJoyce-1

As the world celebrated the loss of a music icon, they didn’t know that there was another loss so big to some of us that our hearts can’t even take it. In the small town of Seaford, Delaware Aunt Joyce gave her last performance. No, she was not a rock star or a singer or even on TV. She was Aunt Joyce to some, Sister, Mother, Grandmother and friend to others. She was a strong presence in her community, she won Mother of the Year, several years ago and if you needed to put together a feast for thousands she was the woman to call.

Birthday Girl in Ottawa Birthday Girl at The Beach

I know I will not do her complete justice here, because I just can’t even list all the things that made Aunt Joyce who she was. She was the eldest daughter of seven children, born and raised in Montreal, QC she made her way down to Delaware where she met Uncle Wes. Although he was in the Military and from Texas and they moved around throughout the years they returned to Seaford to raise their family when he retired.  Uncle Wes built the house they lived in mostly by himself and although we all tried to convince her to leave it after he left us, she stood her ground and refused. “Where would you all stay when you visited?” she would ask, and we told her we would make do, we could take a floor or a couch it wouldn’t matter as long as we got in a visit.  She wouldn’t budge. Her older brother even moved all the way from  Colorado to live with her when he couldn’t take care of himself anymore. And this is the most shocking part of all. Aunt Joyce was still taking care of someone even when she should have just been enjoying life. But that was her way.

If I even tried to list off all the memories I have of hanging out with Aunt Joyce, I would have a novel for you. So I will have to pick my brain for a few select tidbits.

Growing up when we headed down to the Beach, we almost always stopped in at Seaford on the Friday night, a tradition that Hubby and I have continued for the past 16 years, this year would have been our 17th. Despite the fact that Aunt Joyce had to get everything ready for the cottage, she would still cook a turkey dinner with ALL the fixings for the Friday night. Sometimes we didnt’ get in until late, but there was still a plate left for you or enough for a sandwich if that was all you needed. All of us kids would pull out sleeping bags and line the floors in the living room, family room and back porch eager to get tot the beach, not even giving a thought to the adults that made it happen for us each year. We were young, we were foolish, but we always had fun.

As I got older and my trips to the beach included Hubby, then the kids, I realized why my Mom and Aunt Joyce (and my other Aunt’s and Uncle’s) always looked a little haggered for the first few days at the beach. It is hard work to set up a cottage and bring what you need for your family, it’s not like we were staying in hotels with maid service. But when Aunt Joyce was running the show, as kids, we just assumed there would be lunch and dinner served no questions asked.

Some of my best memories are of Aunt Joyce in her kitchen. As kids we helped make jam and peach pie. Her homemade pickles are to die for. And I don’t know about my cousins and cousin-in-laws but there may just be a little fighting over her recipe books, just sayin’.

Whenever we called to announce on of our visits, I won’t say asked to stay because it was a given, we would be in big, big trouble if we didn’t stay. In fact, last Thanksgiving we went to the beach for a couple of days and didn’t stay, Aunt Joyce was a little sad that we didn’t and we felt terrible not stopping in Seaford, something we had done for each and every other trip, but this time we really needed to get our family to the beach for some R&R so we didn’t make that stop, thinking of course, that we would be there in June for our annual beach trip. How wrong we were.

I can’t even go on, I am not sure what else I should say except a huge Thank You to Aunt Joyce, for making a difference in our lives, for opening up your house to us, for never saying no, for feeding us until we couldn’t eat another bite and then feeding us some more. For showing my children the same love that you gave to us over the years and being a huge part of their annual beach holiday. For showing me the love of the Beach Aunt Joyce, because honestly and truly, had you not gone down to Delaware and met Uncle Wes and then returned there, I am not so sure that my love of all things Beach would be quite the same. I wouldn’t have grown up thinking that we all went to the ocean for summer holiday or that everyone had an “Aunt Joyce” who made those things just a little bit more fun.  Thank you Aunt Joyce for the memories and the love.

Delaware - Day 1 of Thanksgiving

We arrived at my Aunt’s house in Delaware around 10:30pm on Wednesday.  We had a great ride, no snow or rain and surprisingly very little traffic.  The kids were great in the car and it was a rather lovely trip down.  True to form, my Aunt had made a Lemon Meringue pie and saved it for our arrival.  My Aunt has been so gracious to have her older brother come and live with her so My Uncle was waiting ever so patiently for us to arrive so he could have his pie.  Hubby and I jumped right in and devoured the first of our many treats over the next few days.

Thursday morning, the kids were up early and I think they may have woken Aunt Joyce, which was fine because she needed to get the Pecan Pie and dinner rolls ready for Thanksgiving Dinner.

I would like to introduce you all to my Aunt Joyce.  The second eldest of seven children, the eldest daughter.  This photo best represents my life of visiting Aunt Joyce.  She still lives in the home that my Uncle built back in 1964, he dug and laid the foundation himself knowing that only he could do the best job possible for his family.  I have spend many mornings talking to Aunt Joyce exactly where I stood and took this photo.  Whether it was peach pie, strawberry jam or carving a turkey, this is where she works and this is where we have enjoyed many conversations.  I remarked to my cousin-in-law when I was digging around for foil to wrap the pie, that nothing has changed in the kitchen so I know where everything is.  I feel very much at home here.

Aunt Joyce

Because I was feeling nostalgic and because we sometimes fly in and out at odd hours and I don’t get the chance I went around and snapped some photos in the house.  Things that are always there, things that you would miss if they were moved.  Some things over the years have changed for obvious reasons, my cousins all got married and moved out but some things are exactly as I remember from when I was a little girl.

You will see Apple and J waiting for breakfast.  Buddy, my cousins Boxer that was visiting my Aunt and Uncle, but when my Uncle passed away he just stayed and kept Aunt Joyce company.  My cousin played football for Salisbury State and there is the photo of him and my Uncle after they won the championship.  There are tidbits of the Dallas Cowboys my Uncle had to bring a little bit of Texas with him to Delaware.  And otherwise, just little bits of this and that.

Enjoy a peek into one of the reasons we travel South so often.

Giving Thanks.
