First Day of Spring

We celebrated the arrival of Spring with our annual trip to the Sugar Bush.

Sugar Bush

When we got up Sunday morning, realized it was the first day of Spring, and the sun was shining we decided to make the trek out to Fulton’s for our annual trip to the Sugar Bush. Normally we would be there when it opened so that we didn’t have to wait in line for our breakfast. However, we didn’t get on the road early enough and when we arrived the line up was beyond ridiculous.  So we decided not even to bother.

We went for a horse drawn sleigh ride, with J right up there ready to take the reigns. Played at the park.

And got some oatmeal muffins (with Maple icing), Maple cotton candy and taffy on snow, with some coffee for Mom at the snack bar.

I was snapping away with my camera and both children gave me this pose at different times. There is now doubt in my mind that they are siblings, just look at them!!

And the littlest of the Beach Family was hamming it up for us in line. It was a fabulous way to round out the March Break, that although not planned ended up filled with lots of friends and visiting at the end that it topped off our wonderful week at home.  We were sad to head back to routine today especially with all the snow that fell today, we just have to hope the sun can peek through and reveal our grass again as we are completely ready for Spring to bring it on.

Saturday we celebrated another year married!  And for the first time in quite a few years we actually had a real date night.

Our original plan was to have dinner at Merlot restaurant, since that was where we got engaged twelve years ago and it is rumored that it will be closing for private functions only later on this year.  Since neither of us were smart enough to call for reservations until Saturday morning we missed out.  The website didn’t say that the dinner was sold out, but apparently it was.  So we went on to plan B, C, and eventually D which had us having an early dinner at Stella Osteria, walking around the market and browsing Chapters without children, and on to a movie at the Cineplex.

We saw Date Night, so appropriate for a wedding anniversary.  We found it surprisingly hilarious.  I say surprisingly because we thought they showed all the good parts in the trailer but, they didn’t! Steve Carroll never disappoints and Tina Fey was perfect for in her role.

We ate too much food, laughed a little too hard then collected the kids from the Grandparents (totally asleep, thank goodness it is warmer out).  All around a perfect evening for the two of us.  Eleven years doesn’t seem like that long some days and seems like eternity others.  Onward to another year.

Saying Good-bye to Summer

Today was the most perfect way to say good-bye to summer for another year.  What started out as a cool Fall morning, turned sunny and warm by noon.  And after lunch and naps (yes, naps, not just Apple) we set out to Mountain Orchards.  We normally go to Jockvale Orchard close to home and pick a basket of apples, but we decided to go further out this year.  And when the flyer for Mountain Orchards landed in our mail box two weeks ago, we were set.

The flyer boasted wagon rides, hay bales to jump in, a corn maze and plenty of place to picnic.  I do not think that they were prepared for the power of the flyer.  We had set our minds to go somewhere else, East of the city, but changed our minds quickly at the proximity of Mountain.

We even had to take two cars because Big Brother A came with us. Sorry we don’t have a mini van folks, but it was well worth the extra gas and inconvenience of two cars to see the joy on J’s face having his Big Brother with him.  Opa was thrilled as well.  This has to be our first outing, other than a restaurant, in over a year.

We were all hot, all except for Hubby who wore shorts, and happy to pluck apples from the trees.  We got lost in the corn maze and J found the way out.  Apple was happy as a, well an apple until the very end, but I am sure she was hot with her fleece on.  We didn’t want to take her out of the carrier to take her fleece off for fear of not getting her back in.

All in all the most perfect way to spend the last day of summer.  And because the line up for fresh apple pies was so long, we stopped at Farm Boy to pick up one of theirs to celebrate the day.  I will be sure to make a crisp with the ones we got today, but I need to find a store with brown sugar, everybody is sold out. What is with the shortage of brown sugar?

I hope you all found a fabulous way to enjoy this last day of summer and if you get a chance and you live in the Ottawa area, be sure to stop by Mountain Orchard with the family, you won’t be disappointed.
