Surfer Girls

Most of my life I wanted to surf.  But, there was always a reason or excuse not to rent a board and try it out.  Then, that last summer before I knew I was  going to be a Mom, I took my youngest Sister with me and took a surfing lesson.  The school that we went to isn’t there anymore, we got before they had to close the doors.  They were a ‘camp’ and they bunk house didn’t fit in with the lifestyle of the other cottagers so they were quietly asked to leave.

My Sister and I were up at 6am and in the water by 6:30am, some big storms were on the way so we had a small window for beginners to try out these boards. I always thought it would be easy to get up onto the board and start surfing away.  It isn’t, let me tell you.  It took me two hours of push ups to actually catch a wave and ride it in.  My Sister caught two that morning.  It was tough, but we loved it and had a great time. My Sister went on to North Carolina for school and I came home to Ottawa to become a Mom, she got to surf with her buddies who all had boards down in Charleston, but not me.  This year I think I will rent a board again and show J that Mommy still has it and can get up on that board.  Now… I wonder if that pink Body Glove swim suit still fits??

Oh, I love that you did this right before becoming a Mom.

I’ve never been on a surfboard, but I always imagine it to be a bit like snowboarding …. except warmer. It’s on my list of things to try someday.

Good for you! I have always wanted to try but as I get older my fear level creeps up. Can’t wait to hear how it goes this summer!

I am very impressed!! I have never been surfing but have been wind-surfing. It was really much harder than I expected to pull the sail up and hold it steady – a lot of upper body strength required. You go girl!!

p.s. made your banana bread again today – tried it in muffins and am about to test them out so I’ll let you know how they go!

I’ve always wanted to surf too! But I’ve never done it. You go girl! (And who cares about the bathing suit, the only thing people will see is the great attitude)

Wow! I’m so impressed that you did that! That is such a great story!

Surfing was never something that was on my radar until I had that my magical moment of insight on that Kinsale, Ireland last fall. That day I vowed that 2010 would be the year that I would get on a surfboard in the Irish Sea! I’m hoping to spend my birthday weekend (thanksgiving weekend in Canada)surfing at that same beach near Kinsale.:)

BTW: I love that you got to experience that with your sister! Such a perfect sister moment!

Yay for surfing! I’m not a great surfer, but I used to go out with my husband quite a bit, before Chloe came along and David decided he preferred fly fishing. The waves on the Oregon Coast are not nice ones, but every once in a while it was really great to be out there together. That is a wonderful memory you’ll have with your sister.
