Fulton’s

We made it to the Sugar Bush!!  And what a fantastic day for it.  We packed up the kids and set our sights on Pakenham and Fulton’s.  The last time we went there was at least six years ago.  There are a few smaller ones closer to the city so if you aren’t up for a drive you can pretend you are out in the country.  Fulton’s is a full working sugar bush.  Which means they tap all the trees (they don’t use buckets anymore, now they use tubing that runs through the forest) collect the sap and boil it all on the premises.  Unfortunately the sap isn’t running yet as our days have not been warm enough.  Most likely by next weekend the sap will be running.

This first photo is a rare one.  Yes, I am in it!  And it isn’t a self portrait.  Hubby actually took a few today (you can see more here). I was impressed.  We are on one of the trails set up for kids.  There are signs describing all the trees and different animals that live in the forest. With pictures of the different foot prints so you can track them in the snow.

A little aside: Thank you for all your wonderful comments on my hair.  Today was a better day.  I realized on Thursday that the stylist misunderstood me and gave me Jennifer Aniston’s hair from 14 years ago at the beginning of Friends and not her hair now, with the long soft layers.  I forgot to bring a photo of myself with this hairstyle and Jennifer Aniston was the only person I could think of that had the hairstyle I wanted. I am still struggling with it being so short, but hopefully it will be long enough by June for me to enjoy it :).  Now back to the sugar bush.

J was lovin’ his pancakes.  And we even got him to eat the sausage by telling him it was a hot dog!  I may have to pick up some breakfast links for him.  Pancakes are actually new on his menu, so I want him to keep eating them.  I make a batch now and toast them up for him.

And the last photo is of the taffy on snow.  A true sugar bush tradition.  They take some nice clean snow, pour the warm syrup on it and it hardens into a lollipop of maple sugar goodness.  We had a perfect morning for it, the sun came out and warmed us up.  We went on the sleigh ride and Hubby and J played in the park.  It truly was a glorious day.  Now the snow can all melt so the Easter Bunny won’t leave tracks in the snow while hiding the eggs.

I’ve never been to Fulton’s. We usually head out to Sand Road (near Morrisburg, half way between here and my moms house). I love the taffy thing and was thinking of doing it at home last weekend when we had all this glorious snow, but I was shocked and dismayed to discover that we ran out of maple syrup. Thank goodness it is the right season to get more!

Oh this brings back great childhood memories. Wehn we lived out east, we would go every year to partake in the sap goodness.

I especially loved the snow taffy!

Glad you had such a great day, and your hair is looking good 🙂

We’ve tapped our maple trees and are collecting sap right now. I remember growing up in Quebec and going to the “cabane a sucre” every year! It was one of the things we looked forward to most! The breakfasts served at the “sugar shack” were the best! Lots of maple syrup smothered all over everything!! Oh, and the maple taffy/lollipops are the best!!!
